World-leading change in UK energy policy just announcement

Congratulations! You’re part of creating world-leading change in UK energy policy.

The UK is now the first major oil and gas producer in the Global North to shift away from fossil fuels - the kind of leadership needed to drive a global phase-out. The government has just announced that they are ending new oil and gas exploration in the UK and have started a plan for workers and communities to transition away from fossil fuels.

This is a massive step forward and will keep many millions of barrels of oil and gas in the ground. We are finally moving towards energy policy guided by public interest, away from oil and gas bosses ransacking the North Sea for profit.

This extraordinary achievement belongs to the sustained, collective effort of thousands of you who made the case for this change. Ending new licensing has been a key demand of our movement - including in the petition we submitted to the government with 1 million signatures. Thank you for your part in achieving this pivotal policy victory.

But we need to be clear: these new commitments need to go even further to meet our climate goals and secure a fair future for workers.

The government must now address these critical gaps:

1. Reject Rosebank and Stop ALL New Drilling – The commitment does not prevent new fields that already have a licence, like Rosebank and Cambo, from being developed. The fight against Rosebank is STILL on.

2. Put a Serious Just Transition Plan in Place – The government has committed to considering workers, communities and supply chains in the transition. But the plans themselves are inadequate. We need to see a coherent and properly financed plan for supply chains, and delivery of good jobs for workers to transition to.

New licensing would have made minimal difference to the amount of gas the UK imports for the simple reason that  the UK has already burned most of its gas. Nor would it have done anything to slow the decline in jobs.

Now that we have shut down this distraction, the UK government can get on with its real job: ending ALL new oil and gas and making sure no one gets left behind in the transition.
