Jackdaw is a proposed new oil field in the North Sea.
We are in a climate emergency. We already have more oil and gas than we can safely use, so we should not be opening up new fields.
On 1 June 2022 the government gave Shell permission to exploit the 56 million barrel Jackdaw oil field in the North Sea. This is one of 39 new fields the government in considering.
As well as fuelling climate chaos, our addiction to oil and gas is also funding Putin's illegal war in Ukraine.
At present the cost of fossil fuels currently falls on those least able to pay it, from the black communities that are more likely to suffer poor air quality to the countries of the global south who experience the 'resource curse' of extractive industries.
There must be no new oil and instead we need a just transition to alternatives such as renewable energy and energy conservation.
